The Lawmakerz
Because bullying is such a widespread problem in our nation and schools, my blog trends from Capitol Hill. From Capitol Hill, I interview Members of Congress who have a story to share or advice to give to victims of bullying.
Viraj Puri and Congresswoman Judy Chu (D-CA)
Congresswoman Chu is the first Chinese American woman to ever serve in the U.S. Congress. She began her career as an educator. She now serves as the Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), and sheis also a Member of the House Judiciary Committee which is responsible for making laws in our country. She is an inspiration for teens around the world.
Viraj Puri and Congressman Mike Honda (D-CA)
Congressman Honda is one of the most prominent Asian Pacific Americans in the U.S. House of Representatives. He has served as Chairman of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) and recently established The Congressional Anti-bullying Caucus.
Congressman Honda is a former school teacher and principal and Peace Corps Volunteer. During WWII, he and his family were sent to live in an internment camp just because they are Japanese-American. But, somehow, he was able to overcome the injustices and mistreatment of the camp. Now he is an example for teens across America who are bullied just because of their ethnicity.
Viraj Puri and Congressman Eni Faleomavaega (D-AS)
Congressman Faleomavaega grew up in a small village in American Samoa, moved to Hawaii where English was his second language. He played football, the ukelele. He even met Elvis.
He also became the first Samoan and the first Asian Pacific American in the history of the U.S. Congress to ever chair the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific. Now, throughout the Asia Pacific region, he is a well-known political leader making a difference for all of us.
